Weekly Wrap up. Week 20. 2024

Hi everyone

Happy Mental Health Awareness week!

Whatever your personal mental state, I think it is an opportunity to look around us and if nothing else, learn more from the many articles and posts on this topic this week.

For my part, I embraced my own mantra of “one day? Or DAY ONE”…. I was only too aware that I was sliding into a fog of “can't be bothered and don’t want to/boo hoo, I’m tired” and had to really pull myself up by my bootstraps .

Thoroughly inspired by my running friends and having always enjoyed endurance events, (and no longer able to run), I dug my (loaned) bike out from under piles of stuff in the garage, dusted it off and hit the road. This is a whole new and terrifying territory for me, having barely sat on a road bike before as I have always been a casual “off roader”.

Needless to say, me being me, one shortish ride by myself was swiftly followed by a 20 miler yesterday with my (extremely fit, extremely road bike experienced) neighbour. I came home, lay on the sofa and could hardly move and the many tasks I had diarised for the afternoon were gone for a burton.

Anyway, I have booked my first (reasonably modest) road event and all I can say is.. “Watch this space”. Mind you - you all come on the journey with me, as the fitter and stronger I get, the harder the classes get (please see lots of laughing emojis here - cant work out how to add them on this program)!!!

So for me, it has been DAY ONE! (When do you think I can justify buying new kit?)

What’s been happening

On Wednesday I had the pleasure of going to the 90th birthday party of a dear friend who started out as one of my very first clients. Jacquie quickly became a friend and her daughter Vanessa subsequently one of my dearest friends to this day. Anyway -90! So you see - clearly it works. I was terribly impressed at how they had repurposed Jacquie’s dumbbells and were using them to hold the balloons down.

This week we beamed into homes in Madrid, Cyprus (was it Crete? Or was it both - sorry!) as well as our regular Kefalonia and France and had a guest from Virginia, USA.

We were back to lifting some hefty weight today (seriously, after my epic bike ride, I was struggling there a bit!!!) and I hope you enjoyed the power Pilates on Thursday which was classic and familiar exercises but with a bit of pace and punch. We worked on the rollers and I sneaked a couple of new moves in there and Clare’s Wednesday class was just fantastic. Hard but fantastic as always.

I do encourage you to try different classes. Clare and I will always accommodate different levels and take best care of you, offering alternatives where necessary.

What’s coming up.

We have a lovely group getting ready to head to the Isle of Wight. If you would like to join us on Thursday 30th, please let me know.

Next week, we will have some footwork and my huge apologies to Andy who asked me forever ago to record this. I am sorry and have been totally remiss. I am going to start recording a lot of classes again now that our newer members are more established and I can step away from the screen a bit but remember that you can always, always un mute and ask questions. Anyway - the library is in need of new content and Clare and I are ON IT!!

I have really enjoyed busy classes and as always, am so impressed by your commitment and hard work. (If you are reading this and haven’t been to a class for a few weeks, this doesn’t apply to you!!) Seriously though, we all KNOW that it is regular, consistent work that gets the results.

Thoughts for the weekend.

There have been a lot of quotes this week that have really appealed to me but here are just a couple -

WOMEN

After a lifetime of being told to eat less, do more cardio and starve ourselves to stay thin, women are … filling up their plates, picking up their weights and stepping into their power”

I just LOVE, LOVE that!

Finally…

Better to the be the oldest in the class lifting weights, than the youngest resident in the nursing home!

Well done everyone.

Have a great weekend x

Members news. Week upcoming : Bank Holiday Monday - class running as usual and this coming Wednesday, 2 x 30 min classes. Details in library. As I am away a few days here and there in May/June, I will continue to put in extra classes now and then to keep everyone topped up. It's all about give and take! Following on from requests this week, upcoming we have a Roll over/Control Balance workshop (Thursday 8am), Back care (Thursday 9am) and Body Conditioning, sculpt and tone style (Wed 8am). All updates will always be in your live calendar. We welcome 4 new members this week and can't wait to see you on the screen! We can now add Portugal to our community! That means that currently, we are beaming into the UK from Cornwall to Yorkshire, Spain, Italy, Greece, France, Germany and now Portugal! We are so much more than Pilates and our community continues to support in so many ways. While a couple of our treasured members are going through some hefty challenges, I am so pleased that you use our online connection as a form of support and to use the friendship of your fellow members. Don't forget you can log in 15 mins early for a natter before class and on Thursdays, I will leave the meeting open after we finish the 9.45am class for anyone to stay on and have a chat. Grab a coffee and log back in even if you weren't in the class. If you would like to join our "Friends of JP's" what's app group , let me know - we are slowly growing and it is a friendly place for a chat and check in, (and a grumble about how tough the class was!). Have a lovely weekend, Jx

I want to keep it as on point and brief as I can and here are some cold, hard facts. Doing SOMETHING is a lot better than doing NOTHING! Whatever equipment you use and program you follow is far less important than the fact that you show up. Regularly and consistently. Only 30% of adults meet the resistance training guidelines and this drops to as low 10% for older adults. What is required? Training all major muscle groups at least once a week Aiming for 2 - 3 sets per exercises Using a weight that is getting challenging by the end of the set Moving through full range of movement. Now, why this is good news is that this can be acheived in whatever form of exercise takes your fancy and over here on our Pilates mat, we tick a lot of those boxes. Going into the 100 and wishing for the end, sitting tall in your Spine Twist and pushing for JUST ONE MORE rep is meeting this! We go through full range of movement, we use bodyweight as well as small equipment, so even if you are not lifting weights, you are doing your bit. (N.b. provided this is min. 3 times a week and you are pushing yourself to max ability in each of those sessions in one way or another and bringing in bands, small weights etc for additional resistance) WHAT COUNTS BODYWEIGHT EXERCISES AT HOME BANDS, BALLS, BODY WEIGHT, LOOPS A QUICK EXPRESS SET WHEN YOU GET BACK FROM YOUR RUN/WALKING THE DOG 15 MINS IN THE KITCHEN - YOU DON'T NEED TO COMPLICATE IT IT DOESNT NEED TO BE FANCY, STRUCTURED OR ELABORATE. IT JUST NEEDS TO HAPPEN Generally ALL types of resistance training work, as long as they are performed with high efforts which means that you get to a point where you are almost at failure. In other words, choose what you enjoy as you are more likely to stick to it and work harder at ut. CONSISTENCY IS KEY and the BEST exercise programme to do is the one you enjoy and will be more likely to stick at! MEMBERS. We have multiple classes involving strength and resistance every week. NON MEMBERS - I am just putting dates together for another 4 week strength program. Please email me if you are interested. More details to follow (I am delighted to be starting a 4 week strength training session with my local running club so I really am doing my best to share the love! )
